Endometriosis is one of those conditions that many women live with for years — sometimes a decade or more — before they're properly diagnosed. The pain gets dismissed as 'bad periods.' The fatigue is chalked up to stress. And in the meantime, the condition silently progresses.
It's time to talk about it.
In endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside the uterus — on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or even the bowel and bladder. Each month, this tissue thickens and bleeds just like the uterine lining does, but with nowhere to go. This leads to inflammation, scar tissue, and sometimes severe pain.
Here's what makes endometriosis tricky: the severity of pain doesn't always match the severity of the condition. Some women with advanced endometriosis have mild symptoms; others with less severe disease are in significant pain.
Diagnosis often requires a laparoscopy — a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the doctor to directly view and assess the tissue. This is an area where Dr. Kevin Quadros's expertise is particularly relevant. He has 27 years of experience as a Gynaecological Endoscopist, with specialised training in Laparoscopy (Grade III and Grade IV) and Hysteroscopy, having first trained at The Royal Free Hospital in London in 1993.
Treatment depends on the severity and your goals — whether that's pain relief, preserving fertility, or both.
If your period pain has been 'bad' for years and affecting your quality of life, please don't normalise it. It could be endometriosis. See a specialist.
